The Cancun International Airport has duty free in its terminals for national or international flights.

Note: These stores are independent from the airport and did not provide contact information. They are located in all the departure terminals. It is not possible to access these stores upon arrival. Duty Free Shops are available at departures only.

Mexican Customs

During the inbound flight, you will receive and need to fill out a customs form (Hacienda). After passing through immigration, you collect your bags and proceed to the exit of the Cancun Airport. You will hand the form to the customs agent and press the button on what looks like a traffic light.

A green light means “go” and red means “inspection” in which case, officials perform a quick inspection.

As a rule of thumb you are allowed to bring into Mexico whatever you need for the time period you will be staying in Mexico. You are not allowed to bring food, fruits and/or products that are not “company” packed and sealed. And if you are bringing food or products they are allowed only if you need them because of a special diet or for medical reasons.

The same rule applies to medicine. You are allowed to bring enough medicine for the time period you will be in Mexico. If you are bringing an unusual quantity of medicine please bring a doctor’s prescription just in case you need to prove the medicine is for your own consumption.

Cancun International Airport has very strict rules about all you can bring, as strict as the USA, so make sure you know what you are bringing.

If you have any questions about Mexican Customs please check our FAQ section. There is a good chance somebody already asked that question. If not, then we strongly recommend you contact your nearest Mexican Consulate. There you can get more specific information about anything that has to do with “allowances” and what products are prohibited in Mexico. Here is a link to Mexican Consulates around the world:

Flight Connections

Cancun Flight Connections

The single most important fact you must understand about Cancun Flight Connections is that THE CANCUN AIRPORT IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the connection of your flights. The airline and/or airlines that you are flying with are responsible for getting you to Cancun on time to make your connecting flight. There is absolutely nothing that the airport can do to assist you with your connecting flights other than giving you the following recommendations:

  • Make sure that you book your flights with enough time to connect.
  • Remember that if you are flying to Cancun Airport, then you most likely are coming on an international flight and MUST go through immigration and customs.
  • If you are connecting flights then you most likely are getting on a DOMESTIC flight and must go to the domestic flights terminal.
  • There is a shuttle between terminal 2 and terminal 3 or viceversa at the Cancun Airport but it is not a scheduled shuttle. It goes back and forth as needed (it goes out around every 15 to 20 minutes).
  • If you are flying in different airlines, then you must claim your luggage from your first flight and check them in on your connecting flight.
  • Immigration and customs DO NOT care if you have to connect flights you MUST go through the procedures as any other person.
  • Airline personnel may be able to assist you under special circumstances, please check with your airline if you think you will need their assistance. Please plan accordingly.

Weekends are very busy at the Cancun Airport, thus give yourself enough time between flights. Weekdays are not as bad but if you are flying in during peak hours (10:00AM to 4:00PM) then you may run into some long lines at the immigration and customs booths.

Travel Regulations

Travel Regulations you need to know.

Cancun Travel Regulations

  1. Enhanced security is in place at all international airports.
  2. Passengers must arrive at least 2 hours prior for any international flight. All carry-on bags are being subjected to security screenings.
  3. All passengers regardless of age (including minors and unaccompanied minors) may be subject to additional screening if selected at random or if circumstances warrant.
  4. Secondary passenger screenings include full body pat-downs and manual inspection of all hand carried items.
  5. In flight, at the discretion of the pilot and the individual airline, passengers may be required to stow all their personal belongings for any portion of the flight.

We higly recommend:

  1. Mark ALL of your pieces of luggage for easy identification.
  2. If you can, please check all luggage including carry-on bags. The less you carry the less additional screenings and manual inspections of carried items.
  3. Get to the airport AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE. Normally you should be at the airport at least 2 hours prior to the scheduled departure time.
  4. If you are traveling with a TOUR PACKAGE that includes transportation, you may want to consider booking a separate PRIVATE TRANSFER for you and your family. With your own PRIVATE TRANSFER you can relax and request a pick up time that is convenient for you and arrive at the airport at your own time, please avoid being rushed to the airport with a bus full of people. CLICK HEREfor Special Rates for Airport Transfers.
  5. If you don’t have transportation scheduled, please pre-arrange your transportation for an easier transition through the airport.
  6. Make sure one person carries ALL required IDs, Tourist Cards, and/or proof of citizenship along with boarding passes. You will be required to show these documents at all screenings.
  7. If you are NOT SURE – Put it in your check luggage.
  8. If you have any questions regarding how early you need to be at the airport or if a PRIVATE TRANSFER is your best option, please call TOLL FREE from the US and Canada at 1-888-414-0017 or direct at +52 998 848 0333.

Mexico's Tourist Card

We can’t stress enough how IMPORTANT it is that you get to the airport with plenty of time to catch your flight. Everybody is being screened and searched, you WILL NOT get any special treatment if your flight is about to leave. These are new SECURITY regulations and officers are available to make sure everybody is screened and NOT to make the lines go fast. PLEASE PLAN AHEAD AND DO WHATEVER NECESSARY TO GET TO THE AIRPORT EARLY.
