Southwest to bring back seasonal RDU-Cancun flight

Southwest Airlines has green-lit the return of its Raleigh-Durham International Airport-Cancun route for 2019.

The Southwest service – always intended to be seasonal – debuted in June of this year.

And, likely due to the route’s commercial success, it’s officially on Southwest’s just-released spring flight schedule, set to make its 2019 debut March 9.

Michael Walden, economist and North Carolina State University professor, says he’s not surprised to see Southwest return to a destination that has “always been popular with US tourists seeking sun and water.”

“Plus, right now, the US economy is booming, there’s more money in consumers’ pockets, and the dollar is strong – meaning trips to foreign countries – including Mexico – are cheaper,” he writes in an email. “Since the Triangle is one of the fastest-growing metros in the country and is attracting young professionals (who like to travel) in big numbers, it makes sense for the RDU-Cancun flight to be reinstated.”

The Southwest flight will likely continue to have competition, as Cancun is a destination served by multiple carrier competitors: American Airlines, Delta Airlines and, starting this fall, Frontier Airlines.

American and Delta started their seasonal Cancun services in 2016.

The route is – at least in terms of carriers – RDU’s most competitive. No other nonstop service is scheduled to be served by four airlines, though New York’s Kennedy, Orlando International, New Orleans, Fort Lauderdale and Denver each have three carriers competing for passengers and higher takeoff frequencies.

The Cancun services only take off on Saturdays.

Taking that into account, RDU Spokesman Andrew Sawyer says the route still averages to about 91.6 passengers per day each way – though not all are traveling via nonstop flights.

Two years ago, that average was 67 passengers per day each way.

The Caribbean market – long underrepresented at RDU – is heating up in general, particularly as Frontier has announced new flights to Montego Bay, Jamaica and Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. Both of those destinations were high on RDU’s list of in-demand un-served flights.

And it’s a lot of international growth in a short amount of time for the airport which, just three years ago, only had international flights to Toronto, Canada and London, England.

Today, in addition to the Caribbean flights, Paris, France is also on that list.

Southwest’s Cancun flight – unlike all of the Dallas airline’s domestic services – arrives at Terminal 2 instead of Terminal 1. And it will be operating on a Boeing 737, according to a spokesman.

Frontier adds Nonstop flight from Las Vegas to Cancun

Frontier Flight Las Vegas to Cancun

The first nonstop flights from Las Vegas to both Cancun and Los Cabos begin Dec. 15.

Frontier Airlines, a Denver-based ultra-low-cost carrier, also recently implemented a code-share agreement with Mexican discount carrier Volaris. That means Frontier can sell connecting flights to Volaris’ destinations in Mexico and Volaris can sell on the Frontier network in the United States. Both Cancun and Las Vegas are primary connecting points between Frontier and Volaris.

Ultra-low-cost carriers sell cheap tickets, but tack on extra fees for seat selection, baggage and carry-on luggage, food and drinks. But Frontier offers either a low-cost fare with ancillary fees or a higher fare that includes the most popular added services.

Frontier has 82 Airbus twin-engine jets and will fly to Mexico with 186-passenger Airbus A-320 jets.

It will become the first airline in more than a decade to offer service to both Canada and Mexico from Las Vegas.

Cancun flights will leave McCarran International Airport about 10 a.m. Mondays and Fridays and return at 8 p.m. The Saturday Cabo flight will leave Las Vegas about noon, returning at 7 p.m. Fares will start at $79 one way.
