Direct flights from Cancun to Los Cabos starting May 18th!

MainThe Ministry of Tourism and Economy (SETUE) of Baja California Sur officially announced on social networks the direct flight from Los Cabos to Cancun. According to the head of the agency, Maribel Collins Sanchez, the new air route between the two most important tourist ports in the country, will be in the coming months the most attractive for domestic and international tourists visiting Mexico.

The low-cost airline Viva Aerobus will be in charge of connecting the state with the Quintana Roo peninsula. The aircraft will have a capacity of 186 seats, with a daily frequency and a fare of approximately 3,500 pesos for a round trip. The flight will debut next Thursday, May 18, 2023.

Los Cabos, Mexico

“We are pleased that with the new flight from Los Cabos to Cancun that begins operations on May 18, with a capacity of 186 seats by the airline Viva Aerobus, Baja California Sur strengthens its air connectivity and with it the attraction of domestic and international tourists by connecting the two most important tourist destinations in Mexico. This action shows the confidence of the airlines in the state, with encouraging figures in tourism development, and therefore in the economy,” said the head of SETUE.

The route will have an estimated flight time of 5 hours, with a stopover of approximately 50 minutes at the International Airport “Licenciado Adolfo Lopez Mateos” in Toluca, State of Mexico.

However, what has attracted the most attention in social networks is the confusion on the part of citizens who comment that this flight already existed before, which is not a novelty. They mention that from Los Cabos you can get to Cancun International Airport through the Benito Juarez International Airport in Mexico City.

Stopover vs connection

Going into context, there are differences between stopover and connection, it is important to clarify this point because there is a lot of confusion among passengers. Many national flights and mainly international flights, their airplanes do not have the capacity to fly for a long time, and they do not have enough autonomy, what does this mean? If they do not have the capacity to fly for many hours, it is necessary that they arrive at a point to refuel.

Both in the connection and in the stopover, the plane has to land at the airport, what is the difference? Simple, in the case of the connection you have to get off your flight to be able to take another one inside the air terminal, in the case of the stopover it is not necessary to get off the plane.

In the case of a connection, you often run the risk of missing your flight or your luggage, this is because you and your luggage have to get off the plane to board a new flight. In spite of the logistics that airlines have, many times there are setbacks such as weather or air traffic that cause delays or cancellations on the routes. This can cause you to miss your connection, and even your luggage can be mistakenly taken on another flight.

The stopover is safer, the plane only makes a technical stop for aerial refueling (fueling), and you and your luggage do not get off the plane. At the end of the check that the entire fueling process is correct, the flight departs again to its final destination. This process takes a few minutes, between 30 to 50 minutes, so don’t worry, you won’t spend much time inside the plane.

Most popular destinations in Mexico

Cancun is the main tourist destination in the country, registering the best occupancy with approximately 80% during 2022, according to figures from the Ministry of Tourism (SECTUR) of the Government of Mexico. The International Airport registered the arrival of 185 thousand flights and an average of 500 daily operations last year.

For this reason, the new connection with Cancun will help Los Cabos to attract tourism mainly from Europe and South America, so far, SETUE has not detailed the benefits in economic revenue that this new flight will leave.
